Heirs of God

Pastor Ose Imiemohon

Text Scriptures: Romans 8: 16-17

The subject of prosperity has been abused and lots of people don’t want anything to do with it. But, the abuse of a thing does not remove the truth about it. As a matter of fact, if something is being abused, you should look at it critically and search out how it affects you. You cannot achieve purpose without prospering. Prosperity is the ability to use the power of God to solve the problems of life. In other words, you will display the power of God on your job to get extraordinary results. You will deploy the power of God to solve everyday life challenges.

Our foundation for being prosperous is because we are heirs of God. Romans 8: 16-17 says “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs — heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together”. ‘Heir’ is a legal term.  An heir is an inheritor. This person is entitled to an inheritance. The word ‘heir’ means a man or woman who by law or by the terms of a will to inherit the estate or the property of another person. In other words, you cannot have an heir without a will.

A will is a written document on how a person wants his estate to be appropriated or divided. However, a will only come s into force when the person who wrote the will dies. This is found in Hebrews 9; 16-17. If there is a testator, there must of necessity be the death of a testator. Without this, the will does not come into force. The disciples could not prosper to the extent that God wants us to prosper as long as Jesus was physically on earth. The will of God was not in force when Jesus was on earth. That is why Jesus was always says “On that day”. This day was the day he died. From the day you accepted Jesus Christ as your lord and saviour, nothing physically happened but you became a son and by right, an heir.

God is very heavy about certain things. One of them is inheritance. He spoke all through the scriptures about it. An inheritance is freely given. You don’t have to work for it. Eyes have not seen nor ears heard, neither has it entered into the heart of man the things God prepared for His people. The scripture above was referring to our inheritance. However, these things must be revealed. It is possible to be born again and die, and know nothing about inheritance. This makes God sad.

There was a certain man who always visited an old man. Unknown to him, the old man was very wealthy. The old man wrote his will and bequeathed everything to him. He placed the will in a book and gave the book to his friend as a gift. However, the man never opened the book. One day, after ten years, while searching the house for something, the book fell down and they found the will. He discovered that everything the man owned was bequeathed to him. He was very broke at this time he read the will. He had the document in his house was still broke. He took the will to the bank and went to claim his inheritance. The bank employees said they always wondered why the owner of the document had never come to claim his inheritance. It is one thing to be given an inheritance; it is another thing to receive it. Anytime, God’s word comes across to you. You either receive or reject it.

And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise”. Galatians 3:29

You must have the mentality of an heir to prosper according to God’s will. One of the reasons people get angry with God because they expect him to settle them. Jesus could serve because he knew all things belong to him. He understood that service is a platform to express certain things, not to bargain with God for things. All things are already yours. You are not trying to obtain any body’s goods. You are just discovering what is already yours. God feels very sad when His children cannot afford the basic things of life. That is not how it is supposed to be. This is because the mindset of God’s children is not that of heirs but slaves. You are an heir regardless of how you were born.

Two men were born in the same family in Luke chapter 15. The prodigal son and his elder brother. The father shared his inheritance amongst the son. The younger one had the mindset of an heir. While the elder one had the mindset of a slave. The opposite of an heir is slave. You believe you struggle and work for anything with is slave mentality. This will affect how you relate to God. Once you have a slave mentality, you get carnal. You will be pursuing short cuts to progress. The heir knows that all things belong to him. Jesus said ‘whatever is the Father’s is mine”. Whatever belongs to God belongs to him. If we are joint heirs with Christ, we own what he owns. It is hundred percent each. Health is part of your inheritance in Christ. It is one of things the death of Jesus secured for you.

And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise”. Galatians 3:29

If you belong to Christ, whatever promise God made to Abraham is yours”. Galatians 3:29 (NLT)

Jews always boast that wherever they go to, they will prosper. They believe that the land must yield its harvest to them. The present day Israel was at a time a desert land. But because of their prosperous mindset, they have turned that desert into  a vibrant and the most productive part of the Mediterranenan. In other words, they know the promise God gave to Abraham and they enforce it everywhere they go. As an heir of God, you need to know what is your right, what is available to you, how to enforce and guard it.

Genesis 17:2 says “I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly”.

Listen, we are in a covenant of multiplication. There is a distinction between addition and multiplication. God’s favourite method of bringing about increase in the life of His children is multiplication. God cannot multiply anything until you give him something to multiply.

I will make you exceedingly fruitful. And I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you. 7 And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and your descendants after you”. Genesis 17:6

Fruitfulness is your birth right. The word ‘I will be your God’ means He will be the source and supply of everything you require for life. God has given unto you all things that pertain unto life and godliness. If God says He will be your God, your job is not your source. Your job is only a channel. And God has several channels of expressing himself. I will be to you a God, and you will be to me a people. God will be the source of everything you require in life to succeed. In other words, it becomes crazy when a Christian bows to anything to God. You make your job your source if you give it seven days a week and have no time for God. Anything that dictates to you how you live your life is your God.

God is the source. No human being is the source. You don’t have to compromise when you know your source. Because God said ‘I will be your God’, he will begin to reveal dimensions of what it means to be God. You have to know dimensions of what God can do. Your inheritance is inexhaustible. If you can exhaust God, you can exhaust it.  If one channel closes, God has several more. Source can never be challenged, but supply can be. Anytime your supply is challenged, you need a revelation of who God is for restoration. Abraham said “lest anyone will say that he has Abraham made prosperous’.

And I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you.

“Against the Ammonites. Thus says the Lord: “Has Israel no sons? Has he no heir? Why then does Milcom inherit Gad, and his people dwell in its cities?” Jeremiah 49: 1

Gad was one of the tribes of Israel. When Leah gave birth to Gad, she made a pronouncement over him saying; “My good fortune and victory has come”. Therefore, Gad had two peculiarities, he had victory and prosperity. Therefore, God was grieved that the prosperous one was now taking the back seat. Milcom is the God of Ammonites, was taking what rightfully belongs to the people of God. God said himself “Don’t we have heirs amongst them’.

The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof and the inhabitants therein. All that is on earth belongs to the sons of God. Are there not heirs amongst us? Why do we come into a city and unbelievers are driving the best. Listen, if you find an unbeliever prospering, he is using what belongs to you to prosper. Until you rise up to the mentality of being heirs, the inequality will continue. One of the most challenging thing about poverty is the acquisition of property.. One of the ways you can break the back of poverty is to own a property.

An heir recognises that as long as he knows his source, nothing he has can deplete. He does not give in fear because you can never deplete the source. When an heir is cheated, he is unruffled. He knows that you cannot cheat a blessed man. It is the same way you cannot finish an ocean. If you pull a tanker of water from the ocean, it is still insignificant. When Abraham said to Lot ‘choose’. Lot practically cleared out everything. He took the well watered land and left the burnt out ones for Abraham.

Lot cheated Abraham. But he did not realise that the covenant of ‘I will be your God, your source and supply’. This covenant is what makes the difference. Lot lost everything he had by the time he came back. Everything Lot had was because of his association with Abraham. Prosperity is not about sense, intelligence or carnality. No! A carnally minded man is enmity with God.  The kingdom prosperity is all round. It will affect your marriage, children and generation to you. An unbeliever will see you and testify that it has to be God who has brought you thus far. Your present state will be so far from your past.

You are an heir!
